Can You Burnout From a Job You Love?
We don't hear about this as much, the burnout conversation is often reserved for jobs which...
👉 Have a lack of control.
👉 Excessive workloads.
👉 Poor rewards.
👉 Unreasonable demands.
👉 Unclear expectations.
But actually, we could and should be talking about the jobs we love a bit more because the variables are slightly different, but the outcome the same...
📌 Overcommitment
Passion for your work can lead to taking on too much responsibility or working longer hours, which can eventually lead to exhaustion.
📌 High Expectations
Loving your job often comes with high personal standards. When you feel pressure to constantly perform at your best, it can create stress and fatigue.
📌 Lack of Boundaries
If you’re deeply invested in your work, it may be hard to set boundaries, leading to a blurred line between work and personal life and resulting in burnout.
📌 Emotional Exhaustion
Even in a fulfilling role, the emotional investment can be draining. Constantly engaging with challenging tasks or colleagues can lead to emotional fatigue.
As is often the case, awareness is king. Awareness of the creep before the bang.
Zooming in on what you can do to look after yourself, protect yourself from you (because if you love your job, we can be our own worst enemy).
Start small and set some non-negotiable for your self-care and remember.
Burnout doesn't care if you love or hate your job. It's coming for you if you over-work, under-recover and don't switch off.
