Don’t Make the Mistake of Being What You Do.
You are not your job.
You are not your business.
For 15 of my 18 years in elite sport, military and working with racing drivers I was defined by what I did.
“Hi, I’m Josh, nice to meet you, I work with Olympic athletes”
In coming ego stroke.
“Oh, that must be cool. Who are you working with, what do you do, sounds so much more interesting than what I do!”
And I bloody loved it!
I loved that ego massage, I felt like I was something special.
I wasn’t.
My job was simply what I choose to do to make money.
I worked with some talented athletes, operators and drivers, but I was also in the right place at the right time and got hired.
I got wrapped up in the world of sport and high performance as so many people do.
It was like a drug.
Well drugs aren’t particularly good for you!
And I soon realised that defining myself by what I did was a fools errand.
Because the industry does what it does, and I got made redundant, sacked, fired, binned, shit canned, call it what you want.
And it crushed me. All of me.
Now I’ve learnt my lessons.
My job is meaningful, I help people like you to chase down your dreams whilst building work:life harmony, what’s not to love!
But I am more than that.
I am a father to a beautiful boy/handful. Partner to a wonderful woman. Explorer of limits and places and much much more.
You are not your job, your business or your industry.
That’s what you do, not who you are.
Here’s a test.
The next 5 people you meet, don’t tell them what you do for the first 5 minutes, even if they ask! It’s very hard if you define yourself by what you do.
