How I Recovered From Burnout in 2 Steps

*This is a picture of me post burnout, 2 years later, I had hair, my beard ruled the roost and I had the sparkle back in my eyes.

I burnt out hard in 2016, I know now why it happened.

Back then I didn't have a clue.

But it happened because of accumulated stress, awful rest and recovery and some pretty dire working conditions.

I invited a lot of the stress in personally, and I take full responsibility for the 💩R&R, I was working in elite sport, I should have known better.

I also had zero boundaries, and I mean zero! I'd be in bed at 9pm, get a call, take it, get out of bed and go and do what ever was being asked of me.

That was the expectation. I literally had my girlfriend at the time screaming at me

"This is not f'ing normal Josh! Don't do it!"

"It's my job, I have to. It's just what I have to do."

But it wasn't and I didn't.

I took 2 simple steps to recovery from my burnout.

1ī¸âƒŖ I left the toxic work environment
Infact, I ran away to india to work for a billionaire but that's a story for another day!

2ī¸âƒŖ I set some firm boundaries
At the start of every job I had I gained clarity on expectations and I stuck to them an ensure my employer did as well.

In my personal relationship I was no longer the 'yes man' doormat. If I didn't want to do something I didn't do it.

I also needed to set boundaries towards myself and my tendancies to over deliver, take on too much, say yes to often and brush aside social for work.

This truly did change my life.

You may not be able to do step 1, but you implement step 2.
