Well-being As a Skill
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition that well-being is not just a state of being, but a skill that can be developed and cultivated over time. In other words, well-being is not something that just happens to us, you don’t just wake up and ‘smash well-being today’ or ‘win at well-being’! But rather something that we can actively work on and improve.
It’s simple but it isn’t easy.
Like any other skill, developing well-being requires practice and effort. This might involve cultivating healthy habits such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep. It might also involve developing mindfulness and meditation practices that help us to become more aware of our thoughts and emotions, and to respond to them in a more constructive way which serves us and what we want.
At the same time, developing well-being might also require you to shift your mindset. We must learn to approach challenges and difficulties in a more positive and constructive way and to focus on the things that we can control rather than the things that we cannot. The mindset is one which requires you to view challenges as opportunities for learning and growth in order to build resilience.
Ultimately, developing well-being as a skill requires a commitment to ongoing learning and growth. It means being open to new experiences and ideas and willing to challenge our own beliefs and assumptions. It also means recognising that well-being is not a destination, but rather a journey that requires ongoing effort and attention. For me personally the biggest challenges relate to the consistency and discipline often required to continually show up, and do the work, even when you don’t want to or there is an easier option.
Well-being is not just a state of being or something we achieve, but a skill that can be developed and cultivated over time. It’s not something you have or don’t have, it is a scale really which slides around based on what we have going on in our lives. A bit like fitness.
But by focusing on healthy habits, developing mindfulness and meditation practices, and adopting a proactive approach to dealing with stress and challenge, we can develop the skills and mindset necessary to promote our own well-being and live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
